TAXI RAZED BY FIRE IN ABUJA

A taxi driver weeps profusely to extinguish a fire that razed a taxi yesterday near Vanguard House, Garki, Abuja.

CORPS MEMBER GANG-RAPED IN KANO

KANO — TWO weeks after the uproar over the reported gang-raping of a student of Abia State University by five hoodlums, the police in Kano State, yesterday, paraded two of the four men who allegedly gang-raped a youth corps member.

One of the suspects has confessed to having allegedly taken part in ‘’gang-raping’’ the youth corps member with two others now at large.

The suspects who identified themselves as Abba Garba, 18, Abubakar Suleiman, 17, Nazeephy Malam, and Ali Wara said yesterday they raped the youth corps member serving at Durumi Secondary School, Kurna in Kano municipality.

Garba, who reportedly led three others to rape the lady said at the Kano State Police Headquarters, that the incident occurred penultimate week in a classroom in the college at noon when the victim who was unaware of the strike by civil servants in the state reported for duties.

Garba said they were in the building because of the torrential rain on the fateful day when the lady in her 20s who spoke her native language which they did not understand, suddenly approached them to enquire why there were no activities in the school.

Suspect confesses
The suspect, who claimed to be a battery charger in the area had this to say: ‘’I relocated to the premises of the college with my friends when it started raining on that fateful day. While we were having fun, a lady suddenly approached us and was speaking a language none of us understood.

‘’I was moved by her beauty, and immediately drew out a sharp knife and in concert with others commandeered her into one of the classrooms, where we forced her to undress and gang-raped her in turns before policemen on patrol apprehended two of us while two escaped.’’

The second suspect, Abubakar, said: ‘’I never violated the lady in question, but was roped in by my friend, Abba Garba, who lured me to the school premises, where the ugly incident happened.’’

The state Police Commissioner, Ibrahim Idris, declined to disclose the identity of the victim ‘’to avoid stigmatisation,’’ pointing out that two other suspects were also apprehended by the police in connection with raping minors in the city.

Meanwhile, the Abia State Police Command has also confirmed that it arrested two members of the gang that raped the university student in the state, few days after the state government described the incident as fiction.

ASUU strike cripples varsities

LAGOS – THERE was total compliance, yesterday, to the one-week nationwide warning strike by Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, disrupting examinations in the nation’s premier university, University of Ibadan, University of Jos  and paralysing academic activities in others.

The warning strike is in protest against Federal Government’s alleged refusal to implement the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement which will be due for re-negotiation in six months.

The agreement, among others include 26 per cent funding of education, wage improvement and upward review of retirement age of professors from 65 to 70 years, was signed by the late President Umaru Yar’ Adua’s administration after four months of strike which grounded all federal and state universities.

But the Federal Government claimed it struck a  deal with the striking lecturers  capable of preventing of apprehending warning strike.

While second semester examination was disrupted in University of Ibadan, and part-time examinations were postponed at University of Jos, because of the industrial action, reports in other parts of the country indicated full compliance by university lecturers in federal and states-owned universities.

In Lagos, academic activities in University of Lagos, and Lagos State University were completely shut down.
In Ibadan, besides the disruption of the on-going second semester examination and its postponement to October 4, Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Other Institutions, NASU and their Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, counterpart, have given notice of warning strike from October 3.

Similarly, academic activities in University of Benin and Ambrose Alli University Ekpoma, in Edo State, were  grounded.
Also at AAU, ASUU Benin zonal chairman, Dr. Sunday Ighalo, described the strike as “total and comprehensive.”
In  Abia State, Abia State University, Uturu, and Michael Okpara University, Umudike, lecture rooms were empty as neither lecturers nor students attended classes.

It’s well, ASUU President

On the strike, President of ASUU, Professor Ukachukwu Awuzie has this to say;
”As far as I know, the warning strike has started. The union has taken a decision and our members will abide. The decision to go on warning strike was taken by the union and not by me.”
Awuzie added that “the warning strike is going on across the universities in the country.”

FG claims deal with ASUU

Meantime, the Federal Government, yesterday, claimed it struck a deal with the striking lecturers capable of halting the warning strike, saying ASUU promised that they will quickly look into it, and urged government to equally keep terms with the agreement.

Speaking with State House Correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Minister of Labour and Productivity, Mr. Emeka Wogu, said: “But, what is most important is the state of the nation. Are we going to be able to take the challenges that will come with shutting the universities, the answer is no and they believe that we should not go to that extent.

”Because when you go to that extent, that mean that you will drive people home, the students will now go into the streets and we are complaining that most of our students are being involved in some unwholesome activities. So, they promised that they will quickly look into it and urged government to equally keep terms with the agreement”.

“At the end of the meeting, we all agreed that the implementation committee that has been in place since 2009 should be expanded to include the Minister of Finance or the representative of the Finance Minister who is equally the Coordinating Minister of the Economy. It will include Minister of Labour and Productivity and the Budget Office”.

He stated that the committee will look at the issues contained in that 2009 agreement and the issues that have militated against the  implementation of that agreement and come up with a position that will indicate the challenges of government or indicate the challenges being faced by ASUU.

Ikechukwu reconciles with Mo’Hits?

Since the surprising performance between the Koko master Dbanj and Ikechukwu Onunaku at the Sprite triple jam held in August this year; which saw both artistes dolling out lyrics from Ikechukwu’s hit tracks Critical and Wine am well, entertainment journalists had concluded that whatever had made the 'Now is the time' crooner walk out of the Mo’Hits family in 2010 may have been finally forgiven and forgotten.

There had been speculations from fans and critics alike that their once robust business and personal relationship will speedily be rekindled.

But then, things may just not be the way they appear.

Recently, this reporter ran into the rap artiste aboard a cruise boat in the Lekki peninsula in Lagos where he confirmed that his relationship with the Mo’Hits family was fine and without hassles.

He said “Me and Mo’Hit’s, we are cool and I want to use your medium to send a strong shout out to them. We are tight together.”

He got really chatty and disclosed that he had a new single already recorded and which should hit the airwaves in a matter of weeks. That’s not all. He also said “I’m already working on my new album and it’s got a lot of great stuffs for my fans”

Then the questions came and the once chatty interview turned completely around. This reporter asked if the Mo’Hits crew will be having any spot in this new album of his. Will there be collaborations? And if Don Jazzy will be producing any or all of his beats just like things had been in the past between him and the crew?

Ikechukwu said “Stop asking me questions that I’ve already answered about the Mo’Hits please. I said we are cool together. Excuse me; I need to change out of my suit”

He would answer no more questions.

Maybe it’s because of his strong training in shotokan karate, aikido, taekwondo and even tai chi but then, this reporter had not pursued the matter any further.

Ikechukwu had hit fame land with his debut single 'My name is' before going on to rock parties with 'Wine am well' a track that had strong collaborations with Dbanj and the beat master himself Michael Collins Ajereh aka Don Jazzy.

In November last year, Ikechukwu had come out public to debunk claims that he beat up the Fall in love crooner and award winning entertainer. He had tweeted “Okay all you rumour mongers, false prophets and bearers of fake gist, I’m gonna say this once, I didnt beat up D’banj. Oya dead it!”

According to tale bearers, the rumoured fight had been the reason for his exit from the Mo’Hits family. It is also one rumour that many now know was a figment of someone’s imagination. But then, what really made Ikechukwu walk out in the first place? And with this temper… has he truly, truly reconciled with the Mo’Hits?

Artistes, to mark the commencement of the 4th season of the West African leading reality TV Show.

MTN, the leading telecom company in Africa is leaving no stone unturned in making this season’s show a worthwhile experience for Nigeria music lovers, as the event will see the lucky 18 contestants from across West Africa compete for the 15 slots available in the Academy for 10 weeks.

Mind Blowing Collaborations

When Nigerian music was at its infant stage, everyone thought collabos were a waste of time and that it took away the spotlight from the owner. Now, collabos are the in thing. Every Nigerian artiste should have at least one collabo to his or her name. Collabos are now a fast-growing trend between artistes and it also signifies unity. Nigerian collaborations are known for spreading unique messages. Below is my list of mind-blowing collaborations done so far in Nigeria.

KEFEE and Timaya’s  Kokoroko

Kefee

Kefee and Timaya truly went ‘higher and higher’ with this hit gospel track. Kokoroko is a song that appreciates Gods love in Kefee and Timaya’s unique style helped profile the song. Little wonder the song fetched several awards for Kefee.

DJ Jimmy Jatt featuring Tuface, Mode 9 and Elajoe in Stylee

No one can forget this song. I fall in love with Lagos over and over again each time I hear this song. It is indeed a timeless piece and the artistes were at their best with this hit. This song says a lot about Naija in the sense that we do every thing in our own style.

Faze and African China’s If you love somebody

Trust Nigerian artistes to always motivate you with their songs. You really don’t have to go to big seminars and listen to big time motivational speakers talk to you before you feel good about your self and approach a lady, Just listen to this hit track from Faze and African China, and you will get the same result.

Sound Sultan and MI’s 2010

Government and politicians who make big promises they won’t keep had better run far away from Nigerian artistes because these promises make viable materials for lyrics.

In this song, Sound Sultan and MI attacked the government and reminded them of the promises they made concerning electricity in 2010. We just love them for these. What better way to remind the government than using music sang by the talented duo of Sound Sultan and MI.

Tuface and 9ice Street Credibility

Tuface: We always peacefully do it very nicely

9ice:   I’m made on the streets, why I no go blow

Of course we believe you guys. This song represents Naijas hood life and we are still loving it, we just can’t stop. We are still waiting for 9ice’s Grammy.

Naija All Stars- My Pain (Tribute to Dagrin)

We lost one of our promising musicians at a young age but Dagrin’s memory is ever green in our hearts.

Nigerian All Stars put together this beautiful song for him as a tribute. Omawumi, Eldee, Banky W and others sang their hearts out for their friend and colleague. Kudos to you guys

MI featuring TuFace Nobody

Seriously, if nobody talks about you, then you are nobody. What more do I say. That single line explains it all. MI and Tuface did not mince words at all in this song. This song encourages one as well as entertains. Our artistes are really mind blowing. I mean who saw this coming?

J Martins and P square E no Easy

‘Even if you no get money, dey jolly dey shake body’ what better advice to give Nigerians than this coming from P-Square and J Martins after all, you can’t kill your self.

This song is very meaningful, I mean if you can’t change a situation, you might as well have fun with it because every thing is vanity.

9ice and Asa, Pete pete

Pete pete is not just a song, it is also an advocacy and it mainly talks about the state of things in our country and those who make things worse.

Asa

Pete Pete calls on the youth to rise and change things for the better. The coming together of these two is simply mind blowing and the song is perfect.

Eedris Abdulkareem and Ruggedman’s Koleyewon

Eedris

No one expected Eedris and Ruggedman to come together. They did and it was amazing. This song puts all Eedris criticisms to rest. Eedris answered questions with this song and Ruggedman also confirmed their friendship. In his own words, ‘this is an unexpected collabo’

Finalists emerge at the MTN Lagos fashion &design week 2011 road show

Ayotomi Rotimi a Business Administration graduate from the University of Lagos has emerged winner of the MTN Lagos Fashion & Design Week (MTN LFDW 2011) Awards Screening Road Show.

The MTN LFDW 2011 Awards Screening Road Show which was recently conducted in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt between the 25th of July and the 3rd of August was aimed at meeting and auditioning the best candidates out of the hundreds of young budding fashion designers, models and creative entrepreneurs that applied for the MTN LFDW 2011 Awards.

The Call for Entries went out on the 30th of June 2011 and by the 25th of July when the team of judges set out for Port Harcourt, thousands of entries had been received from hopefuls residing in the Garden City.
In Port Harcourt, the panel of judges, consisting of Omoyemi Akerele – Project Director of LFDW 2011, Wadami Amolegbe (FashionAfrica.com), Ijeoma Aruguba (British Council) and Kester Osahenye (MTN) met and interviewed prospective winners of the Awards.

On the 28th of July 2011, another team of judges moved to the Federal Capital Territory, where they again assessed future heavyweights in the fields of Nigerian fashion and design.

Bisola Edun, one of the judges and a designer, Tae Woman said: “I commend the work of Omoyemi Akerele, MTN and British Council. In 2008, I won the British Council Young Creative Entrepreneur Award, and I can fully attest to the difference it makes in the career of a budding creative to be recognised by such noteworthy organisations. The British Council workshops I attended thereafter played a very significant part in the growth of my ambition”.

Moving to Lagos on the 2nd of August, the final set of auditions was held at the British Council in Ikoyi. On the panel of judges were Folake Folarin Coker (Tiffany Amber), Uche Eze (BellaNaija.com) and Ojoma Ochai (British Council Nigeria).

With a collection titled ‘Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue’, a vintage- and bridalwear inspired collection was expected. However, Jenny le Roux of Habits twisted this perception and what was seen was a fresh, colour-drenched collection of easy, relaxed silhouettes.
The runway saw floral print for 70’s off-the-shoulder, floaty dresses, floor sweeping, bare backed maxi dresses and roomy jumpsuits. The florals and brights faded into crisp white pieces which added an element of freshness to the collection.
•Lagos models semi-finalists
After the weeklong deliberation by the judges, semi finalists were short listed from the nationwide screening process and the finalists announced: with Ayotomi Rotimi hitting top list as winner, MTN British Council Young Creative Entrepreneur of the Year.

Ayotomi who began to explore the business of fashion, while at university, selling fitted shirts, scarves and tailored trousers to friends and students to augment her allowance, after graduation worked at Fountain Trust bank where she continued to design and market her fashion pieces as a lucrative hobby.

After three years in the banking industry and with a growing passion for designing she enrolled in a course at the London Centre for Fashion studies and resigned to pursue fashion design full time.

This was almost ten years ago and since then her “lucrative hobby” has grown into a successful fashion label in Nigeria, Xclamations, which focuses on affordable, accessible ready to wear clothes.

Speaking on the project Omoyemi Akerele, Project Director of the MTN Lagos Fashion & Design Week, said after the Lagos auditions: “Lagos has produced by far the most impressive of the candidates we have seen.

Whilst we want to ensure fair representation across the 3 different regions, it is however also very important that this platform remains credible, and produces a deserving winner.”

Omoyemi Akerele continued: “I feel even more strongly now that the Nigerian government needs to provide more support for fashion education and training in Nigeria. We need to ensure that our fashion industry continues to grow and to produce names and brands that can represent Nigeria beyond our shores.”

Other Finalists are:

Wizkid Respond To Sex Tape Scandal, Says It Wasnt Him

Less than a month after the EME star allegedly impregnated an undergraduate, unrepentant hip hop star, Ayodeji Balogun popularly known as Wizkid is once again enmeshed in yet another sex related scandal.
The sensational singer was seen in a video having sex with a woman almost twice his age. The video reportedly filmed in a Ghanian Hotel in Accra revealed the Leads University drop-out Hip-hop star pumping away, ‘doggy style’ at a ‘bossomy’ brunette.

The video which got leaked at the weekend was the main news on blackberry messenger and twitter last weekend. Though, the picture cannot be authenticated as that of the 21 year old musician, those circulating it swear that the young dude  in the  doggy styled sex romp is none other than EME Records cash cow, Wizkid.  Meanwhile, EME records boss, Banky W has been blamed for the weird life of the youngster.

However, the sensational young star responded to the scandal in his new single which featured another upcoming EME star, Skales. He claims it was not him and says people were just saying rubbish about him to bring him down.

Red lights up the Emmy 2011 Awards Red Carpet

American stars of television brought their fashion game on the red carpet at the 2011 Emmy Awards. This year, saw body conscious, mermaid silhouettes and lots of strapless styles.
However, the most apparent trend on the red carpet was the array of gorgeous red gowns, a daring choice for the red carpet.
The red carpet fashion gave observers all over the world like me, the opportunity to view an overwhelming array of haute couture cavalcade of night gowns worn by some of the most beautiful mermaid-like actresses of the moment. Using their unique radiance and charm they managed to allure millions of people to watch the fabulous ceremony. Below, are some of the most stunning red gowns I thought were amazing.

Glee star, Lea Michele looked glamorous and daring, in her red Marchesa gown, which featured a plain front and rosette sleeves but the back really showed lots of skin!

You can add Nigerian fashion brand, Tiffany Amber to the list as the brand showcased their “Sirens of the Nile” collection on Saturday 17th of September 2011 at the Charing Cross Hotel in London.
Star power was amplified at the fashion event with celebrities including Nigeria’s Genevieve Nnaji and the UK’s Keisha Buchanan in attendance.

Ras Kimono rocks PH @ MTN concert

Until Ras Kimono mounted the stage at the Port Harcourt edition of the MTN Power of 10 Concerts, the event looked like a rehearsal for a show that would take place another day.

That is not to say others who also performed didn’t do well  but Kimono was not just a game changer for the night, he had the audience rocking like mad all through his performance.

Those who came had heard news of his return to concert circuit didn’t want to miss his performance.

Up until Joseph Ogbuka of MTN’s Sponsorship and Events got on stage to play the role of anchor pending the arrival of Yaw, there was a collective eagerness among members of the audience for the event to start.

The crowd braved the Port Harcourt rain and impossible traffic to arrive the concert venue on time and they were not disappointed when Ras Kimono took them down the memory lane jamming to hits like ‘Under Pressure’, ‘Little Sugar’ and ‘Rumber Stylee’, among others.

It was classic Ras Kimono with his dreadlocks trailing as he leaped into the air repeatedly.

The audience sure looked like they wanted more when he left the stage but there was no two ways about it, they had had fun.

Next was The Prince who gave nothing less than a princely performance. When J.Martins stepped in, the audience did not need anyone to tell them that he had come to the Civic Centre venue to make them happy. And he did just that.

The last act for the night was Wizkid and there was no kidding about his performance. There is no doubt that Wizkid knows his music and how to use it to his benefit and that of his audience.

Apart from the local acts who graced the stage earlier in the evening there were also Inyanya, Chidinma, Shon Terror, and Wacomzy.

Actress Uche Ogbodo Face Charges

Sultry actress, Uche Ogbodo is in trouble and except a miracle happens, the Enugu State born screen diva may lose her licence and right to practice.

As you are reading this, the fate of the actress is in the verge of being decided by Nollywood heads of guilds namely, Actors Guild of Nigeria, Directors Guild of Nigeria and the Film and Video Producers and Marketers Association. The officials of these bodies are meeting soon to deliberate on a report brought against her by an Onitsha based film production outfit, AMACO Investment Limited.

The production outfit, HVP reliably gathered, reported the actress to the guilds’ heads following what it described as “the unruly behaviour of the actress” while on set. The company claimed that the actress’ actions caused a delay in the completion of its on-going production. The management therefore wants N2 million from the actress as a compensation.

Uche, a lead cast in the new movie currently being shot on locations in Awka, the Anambra State capital, according to our source, posed a big problem to the cast and crew on set.

“She is always disappearing on set to attend to her personal problems and would keep everyone waiting for hours before appearing on set.

“And when she eventually arrives on set, she’d never showed any remorse for her actions.

“During the weekends, Uche would abandon set claiming that she was going to keep an appointment with an Embassy. She refuses to be controlled. Stardom has truly entered her head, ” an agonised source narrated.

For her alleged misconduct and delay, deadline for the completion of the movie which started production in September 6, has been shifted on several occasions. Uche is playing the role of Titi in the yet to be completed movie, and she was paid the sum of N200,000 as her professional fee.

With things going sour between her and AMACO Investment, the latter is now seeking a N2 million compensation for her role in delaying the production of the movie.

When contacted during the week, AGN President, Segun Arinze confirmed the matter, adding that “the guild is investigating the allegation.

“ We are also looking into the actress’ allegation that she was beaten up by the producer while on set”, Mr. Arinze added.
